Jumping, to get just a little higher for a moment. I think it cheers you up.

Carrying a birthday cake, the pure, earnest effort of not dropping it. Those short twenty-odd seconds of thinking only about that one person feel like an angel to me.

Shibuya, Shinjuku. You can feel the loneliness, despair and emptiness of living in an exclusionary city. The way people keep living hard while finding life difficult is compelling; it's a work I keep going back to. It was also made into a film, and the shots of red aircraft warning lights blinking, as if seen through the windows of high-rises, are superb. I rented it at the now-closed Shinjuku TSUTAYA, saw it at Shinjuku Piccadilly, bought the DVD and watched it many times. It's an important work to me.

A book with an adolescent sensibility, intoxicated poems and a daydream-like air. I've always found beauty in inorganic things, which I think comes from a world-weary streak in me. The cover is by the illustrator Minahamu, which is another draw. I'm pulled in by its coming-of-age literary feel, like Kei Nakazawa, and by characters with fragile, lonely eyes and a shadow about them. My favourites among Minahamu's works are Yume ka Utsutsu ka, Haru no Furakoko, Seikatsu to Iiwake and Marine Resort Minamikaze.

Most of my favourite places and things don't come up in an iPhone search. That's something free and calm. The cover reminds me of the view of Setagaya from my room after waking up past noon. The view from an apartment block, the curtains, what's outside the window: I find them very appealing. I think of smell as belonging to the realm of literature, and these poems also carry the smell of summer.

The word choice, wrapped in layer upon layer of metaphor, stays with you. The musicians who appear in the poems are appealing too. I'm drawn to its subculture-yet-everyday viewpoint, like Kiriko Nananan or Kyoko Okazaki. A ruruMu scarf, a KILL REMOTE sweatshirt, a baggy KEISUKE KANDA duffle coat, a BALMUNG neoprene big hoodie, a CHROMA dystopia coat, Seiko Oomori's album Zettai Shojo, Setagaya, Suginami, Nakano, Nerima. Mira Tezuka's poems make me think of these things and places. The words feel like ones Tezuka actually said or heard, and the collection is raw and full of everyday life.

The cover is by the illustrator Tomoko Oshima, which is another draw. Her characters are pale girls with dead eyes, a shadow about them and an air of misfortune. The theme focuses on girls like film extras, with the lived-in feel of a one-metre radius. A fragile, faint, almost-vanishing, always somewhat lonely, pale, thin, low-temperature mood. It reminds me of Machida, Tokyo. As a student I often went to her events, like the solo show Parco demo Roiho demo Rabuho demo ii yo at GALLERY X BY PARCO in Shibuya and a signing at Village Vanguard. Hatsutani's poems are fleeting and full of everyday life. The superb, one-of-a-kind word choice and subculture feel are what define them.

1 more in the originalA cover like a faint watercolour landscape, like transparent fantasy literature. Pure, a daydream. A wish to die and an attachment to girlhood. Inorganic, aesthetic fragility. Poems like shoegaze. Fujimiya's poems remind me of 2010s Twitter and music like the Zankyo Record label. They remind me of people with a dreamy countercultural, yume-kawaii touch: Kanashinami, Momoko Midorikawa, Nikamokyu, Makiron, Rinahamu. The obi carries a comment from Haruka to Miyuki, which is another draw. I'm drawn to its white-clover beauty and quiet, faint word choice. The mood is wistful nostalgia, intoxication, weightlessness, pent-up gloom and loss. Like staring at the light outside in mourning clothes in summer until you stop seeing its colour, then looking away and seeing an afterimage in the opposite colour. The loneliness of an amusement park after closing.

1 more in the originalIt's full of poems set along the Odakyu Line, which I love. The air of Heisei and the 2010s that will never come back, and the fleetingness of places. Poems marked by nihilism and subculture. The chlorine taste of Shinjuku tap water. A high school in Komae, American Spirit menthol lights, Machida, Makura Izumi's Candle, Tomoko Oshima's illustrations, an M-51 parka, Yukiko Goto's Mizuiro no Heya, Kengo Hanazawa's I Am a Hero, Hasami Group's LADY, Inio Asano's Goodnight Punpun and so on come to mind. I think it suits people who spent their sensitive years in the 2010s.

The obi carries a comment from Makoto Toda, memorable from Miss iD, which is another draw. I'm drawn to its elegant, gentle word choice, like a delphinium flower. It reminds me of otonasium, a Futatsukukuri sailor-tie dress, Ririnka, Manami Usamaru's photobook Kitto Zenbu Daijobu ni Naru, Takuro Ishizashi's Kimi ga Sumu Machi e and so on. I think it's a collection as warm as if it were hugging spring.
- 11Tanabata
Poems of longing and yearning, playful word choice, a sense of relief and resignation. The air after watching the films of Kiriko Nananan's blue and Pumpkin and Mayonnaise. Tomoko Sakurai's poems are marked by delicacy and loneliness. I think it's a collection that suits July, August, summer.
- 12Summer holidays

Google
4 more in the originalPoems that are at once full of loss and pop. I think it's a book packed with poems of an impersonal, cool detachment. An approach that holds the actual and the unreal together. I think it suits reading in summer in mourning clothes.

3 more in the originalCool, clean, innocent, sharp poems. The feelings of a schoolgirl who doesn't fit in and keeps her distance. Poems with the beauty and purity of the first time you touch a Deskel. Mai's poems are intoxicating, with a delicate transparency and faint word choice that stay with you. These Calpis Water poems suit reading on the way home from school, after class, in April.

5 more in the originalMany of the poems are set in Shibuya and Ogikubo. Delicate poems like short stories. The proper nouns in the book are charming. A femme fatale air. Nishi-Ogikubo is a place I feel very strongly about. It reminds me of a restaurant in Nishi-Ogi called Mushibako. It also brings to mind Hisashi Eguchi and others. A book that suits this season, when you can live a fictional romance.

4 more in the originalThe poems about convenience stores, variety shops and fast-food places stay with you. The poems of flat, inorganic conversations at the konbini are superb. Delicate, thin, absurd poems. Best read on a late-night trip to the konbini in the cold of November or December.
- 16Christmas
3 more in the originalMarked by the particular air of literary fiction. The occult side of the poems reminds me of BURST, the counterculture magazine Core Magazine published from 1995 to 2005, and of Minoru Torihada and Keroppy Maeda. Ko Machida wrote the obi, which is appealing and convincing. The delusion, intoxication, euphoria and obsession recall Ramo Nakajima and Gensho Ishimaru. I think it also suits readers of the occult news site TOCANA, Gekkan Cyzo and the occult monthly Mu.

7 more in the originalThe poems of what a girl lives through between 14 and 17 are superb. Science room, nurse's office, art room, after school, the principal's office, uniforms, textbooks, leather shoes, graduation, spaces: through all these subjects the young body's sensitive, painful wavering becomes a grotesque, menhera-literature schoolgirl's days turned unreal in verse, with an air of self-consciousness, confinement, alienation and sorrow. The fleeting take of a gloomy teenage schoolgirl steeped in literature stays with you. Poems that bring back memories of wearing a school uniform. I think it suits people who find life hard.

5 more in the originalPoems of gentle thinking. It feels like watching one of Tsugumi Matsunaga's faint music videos. It reminds me of songs like Hirone's Calorie Mate and Tsukushi's rasolpa no Sunairo. A slow, aesthetic, slightly empty mood like clear water that is calm and soothing. Refreshing like lemon squash, with a faint nostalgic air. I think it suits people who like the faint, calm air of Tennendai.
